Name each Pinterest board with the phrase people type into Pinterest search, such as "Small Guest Bedroom Ideas", not "My Happy Place". Pinterest says board names affect how your content shows up in search. In our view, that means clear beats clever.
This guide gives you a three-step naming method and real search figures for two niches. It also covers more name ideas and how to organize your boards.
Key Takeaways
- Pinterest says board names, descriptions and categories all affect how your content shows up in search, and that more specific is better.
- Close wordings can show very different figures. "Ideas For Small Bedrooms" showed 11k in PinDepth and "Bedroom Ideas For Small Rooms" showed 568k. Their period and region are unconfirmed, and they don't predict reach.
- In our view, choose the phrase with the highest figure that still describes your Pins accurately.
- We couldn't find a published length limit for board names on Pinterest's help pages. Put the search phrase first and keep it readable.
Do Pinterest board names matter for search?
Yes. Pinterest's own guide says: "Board names, descriptions and categories all impact how your content shows up in Pinterest search results, in addition to the recommendations that are made. So the more specific, the better." (Pinterest Create, How to create a board, retrieved 2026-11-08).
Pinterest's community team gives similar advice: "Use clear, keyword-rich titles that show what your board offers". Its example is "Small-space storage ideas" (PinterestIvy, Pinterest Business Community, October 2025).
The name isn't the only thing that counts. Pinterest also suggests starting with "at least 6 to 8 relevant Pins" so a board has enough context. It says 20 Pins paints a fuller picture.
Pinterest's quote also mentions categories, but its Edit a board page lists no category field. Focus on the name and description, which you control.
How to name a Pinterest board in 3 steps
A good board name comes from what people search, what you actually Pin, and a quick check of the wording.
Step 1: Start with what a searcher would type
Write the topic of your Pins in plain words. Think "small bedroom ideas", not "Sweet Dreams". If you wouldn't type it into the search bar, it probably won't work as a name.
Step 2: Make it specific
Add the detail that describes your Pins. "Dinner Recipes" could mean anything, while "Ground Beef Dinner Recipes" tells people and Pinterest what's inside. This is Pinterest's "the more specific, the better" in practice.
In our view, don't get more specific than your content. A narrow board only works if you have enough Pins to fill it.
Step 3: Compare the wording before you commit
Type your phrase into Pinterest search and look at the suggestions. They show which phrases exist, but give no search numbers. To compare phrases, check their search interest over time in Pinterest Trends, or use a keyword tool that shows figures.
In our view, you should then pick the phrase with the strongest interest or highest figure that still describes your Pins accurately. If the top phrase is broader than your Pins, step down to the next one.
We ran the "Ideas for Small Bedrooms" niche through PinDepth, our own keyword tool, on 2026-11-08. These phrases are close in wording, though some may be broader searches than others:
| Board name | Pinterest search figure |
|---|---|
| Bedroom Decor Ideas For Small Rooms | 9k |
| Ideas For Small Bedrooms | 11k |
| Small Bedroom Decor Ideas | 34k |
| Bedroom Ideas For Small Rooms | 568k |
Source: PinDepth, showing Pinterest's own rounded figures, retrieved 2026-11-08.
Treat these as a comparison, not a forecast. We can't confirm the period or region behind these figures, and some were refreshed up to a week apart. A bigger number doesn't promise you more views. It does show that close wordings can carry very different figures, so check before you commit.
Our guide to adding keywords in board titles shows where else the same phrase should go.
Pinterest board name ideas by niche
The home decor and food tables use real figures from PinDepth. We picked phrases from each niche's keyword tree that would work as board names, so they're a selection, not a ranking. The limits above apply to them too. The last table shows the method for other niches, without numbers, so check those phrases before you use them.
Home decor: small bedrooms
| Board name | Pinterest search figure |
|---|---|
| Bedroom Ideas For Small Rooms | 568k |
| Small Bedroom Ideas for Couples | 61k |
| Small Guest Bedroom Ideas | 42k |
| Small Bedroom Decor Ideas | 34k |
| Small Bedroom Layout Ideas | 23k |
| Storage Ideas for Small Bedrooms | 3k |

Food: dinner recipes
| Board name | Pinterest search figure |
|---|---|
| Easy Dinner Recipes | 3m |
| Chicken Dinner Recipes | 483k |
| Quick and Easy Dinner Recipes | 347k |
| Easy Dinner Recipes for Family | 240k |
| Pasta Dinner Recipes | 167k |
| Ground Beef Dinner Recipes | 139k |
| Shrimp Dinner Recipes | 98k |
| Vegetarian Dinner Recipes | 54k |

A food blogger with a shrimp recipe collection should still pick "Shrimp Dinner Recipes" over "Easy Dinner Recipes". In our view, a smaller phrase that fits your Pins beats a huge one that doesn't.

Fall and Christmas phrases are seasonal topics. Our guide to evergreen vs seasonal Pinterest keywords helps you decide which topics deserve a permanent board.
Should you use cute or clever board names?
For boards you want people to find, we'd say no. Few people would search for "My Happy Place" when they want bedroom ideas. For personal or secret boards, name them anything you like.
We haven't found any Pinterest statement that cute names are penalized. In our view, they don't tell a searcher what the board is about. Your personality belongs in your Pins and description, with the search phrase in the name.
How long should a Pinterest board name be?
Long enough to hold the full search phrase, and no longer. We couldn't find a character limit on Pinterest's help pages, and blog advice varies. SimplePin Media says "no more than four words", while Isabel Talens refers to "the 50 characters that you have".
Neither links to a Pinterest source. Our advice is to put the search phrase first, skip extra words, and check that the name reads well on your profile.
Write a board description that matches the name
Pinterest describes this field as "A little bit about your board" (Pinterest Help, Edit a board). We suggest repeating the phrase from your name and adding one or two related phrases, in normal sentences.
Here's an example for a board named "Small Bedroom Layout Ideas":
Small bedroom layout ideas for tight spaces. See where to put the bed, how to fit a desk, and small guest bedroom ideas that still feel roomy.
One community member gives similar advice, writing that descriptions should be "an extension of the board titles" (kellybazzle, Pinterest Business Community, January 2025). That's practitioner advice, not a Pinterest rule.
How to organize your Pinterest boards
Keep one clear theme per board, then use Pinterest's own tools to tidy up. We haven't found a Pinterest statement that these tools change search results, but sections and merging help keep each board focused. Pinterest advises you to "reflect that theme in your board name" (Pinterest Create).
- Use sections for sub-themes. Pinterest says sections "are helpful for covering sub-themes of the main board's theme." A "Dinner Recipes" board could have sections for chicken, pasta and shrimp, which add the detail a broad name lacks.
- Merge boards that overlap. Pinterest says merging lets you "turn one of the boards into a section of the other board."
- Archive boards you've finished with. Archived boards "will not show up in your public profile" and can't take new saves. You can unarchive them at any time (Pinterest Help, Archive or delete a board).
- Be careful with delete. "When you delete a board, all the Pins on the board are deleted, too." You get seven days to restore it, on desktop or Android only (Pinterest Help).
How to rename a Pinterest board
You can change a board name at any time. Pinterest's Edit a board steps on the website are:
- Click your profile photo at the top right, then click Boards.
- Click your board to open it, then click the ellipsis icon next to its name.
- Select Edit board and change the name or description.
- Click Done.
In the app, tap your profile picture, tap Boards, open the board, tap the ellipsis icon, and select Edit board and header image.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good name for a Pinterest board?
A good name is the phrase people search for that matches your Pins, such as "Small Guest Bedroom Ideas". It should be clear and specific.
Can I change a Pinterest board name later?
Yes. Pinterest says you can edit your board at any time, including its name and description. We haven't found any Pinterest statement that renaming a board hurts it.
Should I use hashtags or emojis in board names?
We haven't found a Pinterest statement on this. In our view, plain words are safer, because people search in words. Pinterest staff also recommend words over hashtags, as we explain in whether Pinterest hashtags still work.
How many boards should I have on Pinterest?
We haven't found a recommended number from Pinterest. A better test is whether you can fill each board with relevant Pins. Pinterest suggests starting with at least 6 to 8.
